Once in a lifetime – feeling like Harry Potter

Irgendwann letztes Jahr fiel mir auf, wie oft ich schon in London war – und dabei aber noch nie an einem anderen Ort in den UK. Ich erwähnte, dass ich dies dringend ändern müsse. Und da mein wunderbarer Boyfriend manchmal eben doch ganz genau zuhört, bekam ich einen Überraschungs-Trip nach Edinburgh zu Weihnachten! 🙂 Im Mai diesen Jahres ging es los und wir erkundeten diese mystische Stadt gemeinsam…

„Athens of the North“

Die schöne Hauptstadt Schottlands war eine absolute Überraschung für mich. Eine Positive! Mit ca. 1/2 Million Einwohner eine Großstadt, ist Edinburgh doch sehr überschaubar und man kann eigentlich alles wichtige fußläufig erreichen – was ich liebe! Durch die bekannte Haupt-Einkaufstraße, die Princes Street, wird die „New Town“ mit ihren grünen Parkanlagen und den beeindruckenden Herrschaftshäusern von der „Old Town“ mit dem markanten Edinburgh Castle abgegrenzt. Verlaufen ist hier kaum möglich. Aufgrund der vielen neoklassischen Einflüsse in seiner Architektur, wird Edinburgh auch als das „Athen des Nordens“ bezeichnet.

Accommodation

Wie so oft fand ich auch dieses mal meine Traum-Unterkunft auf Airbnb. Es war das erste mal, dass wir nur ein Zimmer in einer Wohnung gebucht hatten, anstatt einer gesamten Unterkunft für uns alleine. Da es nur für wenige Nächte war, war es eine Art Experiment- und es ist geglückt. Ich wollte unbedingt in dieser traumhaft eingerichteten Stadtwohnung der Inneneinrichterin Jessica unterkommen! Ein großer Anreiz waren auch die beiden goldigen Cockerspaniel, die dort auf uns warten würden. Jessica und ihr Mann waren total nett und der eindeutige Vorteil mit Locals unter einem Dach zu wohnen, sind deren Insider-Tipps.

Die Wohnung liegt in „New Town“, ist nur wenige Gehminuten vom Zentrum entfernt und die nettesten Cafés fanden wir direkt um die Ecke. Vielleicht wäre das Zimmer auch etwas für Euch? Wenn Ihr zu dritt oder viert seid, kann man auch die gesamte Wohnung mieten. Mehr zur Unterkunft hier.

Like a fairytail – the Castle & the Royal Mile

Grundsätzlich muss man sagen, dass man in Edinburgh nicht nach dem hübschen Altstadtkern suchen muss, denn fast die ganze Stadt gleicht einer liebevoll aufgezogenen Harry Potter Filmkulisse. Die vielen hübsch bepflanzten Pubs und die historischen Einflüsse schaffen eine Atmosphäre wie im Mittelalter.

Der Höhepunkt dieser Märchenwelt ist das Edinburgh Castle. Erscheint es sehr hoch oben auf einem der drei vulkanischen Hügel mitten in der Stadt zu thronen, geht der Aufstieg dann doch schneller als erwartet. Durch enge Gassen und über kleine Treppen scheint jeder Weg zu dem Haupt-Sightseeing-Spot der Stadt zu führen. Wenn Ihr einen typisch-touristischen Besuch des Castles plant, dann solltet Ihr diesen in der Mittagszeit einrichten. Pünktlich um 13Uhr wird täglich (außer sonntags) die „One o`clock gun“ abgefeuert. Dieses historische Zeitsignal sowie die vielen anderen Gebäudekomplexe des Schlosses sind den Besuch absolut wert. Vor allem aber der fantastische Ausblick über die Stadt, lohnt den Aufstieg.

Direkt vor dem Castle beginnt die berühmte Royal Mile, Edinburghs wohl älteste Straße. Auf der 1,7km langen Touristenmeile, ist vom karierten Schottenrock über schottischen Whiskey und jegliche andere Souvenirs alles zu bekommen, was man nicht braucht. 😉  Lohnenswert ist ein Blick in den Royal Mile Market. Ein kleiner Boutique Markt mit nettem Café in der alten Tron Kirk Kirche, ebenfalls auf der Royal Mile.

Spaziert man die Straße weiter hinunter, passiert man automatisch viele Sehenswürdigkeiten, bis man am Ende zum Palace of Holyroodhouse gelangt. Dies ist die offizielle Residenz der britischen Königin in Schottland. Gleich daneben befindet sich auch das Scottish Parliament. Dieses hochmoderne und architektonisch interessante Gebäude dürfen wir nach einer kleinen Sicherheitskontrolle kostenfrei besichtigten.

Seid Ihr immer noch nicht müde, geht es gleich zum nächsten Hotspot: rauf auf den Calton Hill. Nicht nur, dass man von hier oben einen weiteren beeindruckenden Blick auf die Stadt aus der Vogelperspektive genießen kann. Auch auf dem markanten Hügel selbst, gibt es einges zu sehen! Bei einem kleinen Spaziergang könnt Ihr das Nelson Monument, das National Monument sowie das City Observatory erkunden und tolle Fotos machen.

The City Center

Im Stadtzentrum führt kein Weg an der Haupteinkaufsstraße, der Princes Street vorbei. Hier findet man alle bekannten Modeketten sowie Schottlands ältestes Kaufhaus, das Jenners. Ein kleiner Spaziergang durch die Princes Street Gardens, angrenzend an die Straße, gehört ebenfalls zu jedem Stadtbesuch. Die hübsch angelegte Gärten direkt unterhalb des Castles, laden vor allem bei schönem Wetter zu einer kleinen Pause ein. Direkt neben den Gärten befindet sich die Scottish National Gallery. Liebhaber der Alten Meister werden hier voll auf ihre Kosten kommen. Die Sammlung ist sehr beeindruckend. Aber auch für nicht so Kunstinteressierte empfehle ich den Besuch! Der Eintritt ist frei und das Gebäude selbst ist mit seiner Architektur den Rundgang wert.

Steigt man von dort aus über den Hügel, auf welchem das Castle liegt, kommt man zum bekannten Grassmarket, mit seinen hübschen bunten Häuserfassaden. Die kleinen individuellen Läden dort, haben mir besonders gefallen. Hier findet man auf jeden Fall hübsche und originelle Mitbringsel, abseits der klassischen Touristen-Fallen. Bei Papeterie und Modeasseccoires schlug ich selber zu.

Weiter geht es zur Edinburgh University. Diese war mir auf Bildern bei meiner Vorab-Recherche positiv aufgefallen und somit statten wir dem beeindruckenden Campus einen Besuch ab. Auch hier wieder das reinste Harry Potter-Feeling!

Sehr urig und sehenswert ist auch der alte, in einem Tal liegende Stadtteil “Dean Village“. Ein verwunschener romantischer Ort, der auch fußläufig aus dem Citycenter zu erreichen ist. Am besten wählt man den Weg entlang des kleinen Flusses. Einmal mehr fühlt man sich in vergangene Jahrhunderte versetzt und kann eine kleine Oase der Ruhe mitten in der Großstadt genießen.

Coffee & breakfast lover – watch out!

Sehr angetan war ich von Edinburgh auch in Sachen Kaffee und Frühstück! Fast zu viele gute Optionen, um sie alle auf einem Kurztripp ausprobieren zu können! Die folgenden Cafés liste ich nicht einfach nur auf, weil wir dort waren. Sie waren tatsächlich ALLE super!

Das Urban Angel würde man von außen glatt übersehen, aber der Besuch lohnt sich! Gemütliche Location mit tollem Frühstück. Im Anschluss kann man sich gleich ein paar Meter weiter noch einen perfekten Barista Coffee To Go im Wellington Coffee mitnehmen. Den besten Brownie meines (bisherigen) Lebens fand ich tatsächlich auch in Edinburgh: im Cairngorm Coffee. Dieses gibt es 2 Mal in der Stadt und beide Läden sind auch in Sachen Kaffee absolut empfehlenswert! Genau wie das Fortitude Café, wo ich endlich meine geliebten warmen Scones bekam! Köstlich! Am zweiten Tag gab es Frühstück in dem schönen Café Leo`s Beanery. Yummi Porridge und Eggs Benedict ließen uns höchst zufrieden in den Tag starten.

Zum Lunch empfehle ich Euch The Pantry. Ein helles stylisches Café mit tollen Snacks und nettem Service. Mein pochiertes Ei auf Veggie-Brot war fast zu schön zum Essen!

Für eine süße Pause am Nachmittag kehrt Ihr entweder bei Lovecrumbs (bester Kuchen) oder Mimi´s Little Bakehouse (Schoko-Schock für richtige Naschkatzen) ein.

Und für die Healthy People unter Euch gibt es die Hula Juice Bar, gleich am Grassmarket. Hier bekommt Ihr von frischen Säften, über Avocado-Brot und die klassischen Smoothie-Bowls, alles was das gesunde Herz begehrt.

Summary

Dafür, dass ich mit wenigen Vorstellungen und Erwartungen nach Edinburgh geflogen bin, war die Begeisterung dann umso größer! So eine hübsche Stadt mit viel Geschichte, interessanten Sehenswürdigkeiten und tollen Cafés! Ich habe definitiv Lust bekommen, mehr von Schottland zu erkunden und sicher würde sich Edinburgh auch prima in eine Rundreise durchs Land integrieren lassen!

Somewhere last year, I noticed how many times I’ve actually been to London – but never in any other place in the UK. And I mentioned that I had to change this urgently. And since my wonderful boyfriend sometimes listens very closely, I got a surprise trip for Christmas and we explored this mystical city together in April this year …

„Athens of the North“

The beautiful capital of Scotland was an absolute surprise for me. A positive one! With about 1/2 million inhabitants quite a big city, Edinburgh is very clear and you can reach everything on foot – which I love! The famous main shopping street, the Princes Street, seperates the so-called „New Town“ with its green parks from the „Old Town“ with its impressive mansions and the distinctive Edinburgh Castle. Getting lost is hardly possible. Due to the many neoclassical influences in its architecture, Edinburgh is also referred to as the „Athens of the North“.

Accommodation

As so often, I found also this time my dream accommodation on Airbnb. It was the first time that we had booked only one room in an apartment, instead of a whole place for ourselves. Since it was only for a few nights, it was a kind of experiment and it was successful. The beautifully furnished city apartment of the interior decorator Jessica and her husband was just as expected! A big incentive were also the two golden Cockerspaniel, which would wait for us there. The residents of the apartment were totally nice and the clear advantage living with locals, are their insider tips.
The neighborhood in which the apartment is located was “New Town”. So it is within walking distance from the center and the nicest cafes were just around the corner. Perhaps the room would be something for you? Find out more about it here.

Like a fairytail – the Castle & the Royal Mile

In Edinburgh you do not have to look for the pretty old town core, because the whole city resembles a lovingly re-arranged Harry Potter scenery. The many beautiful pubs and the historical influences create an atmosphere as in the Middle Ages.
The highlight of this fairytale world is the Castle of Edinburgh. If it appears to be very high on one of the three volcanic hills in the middle of the city, the ascent then went much faster than expected. Through narrow streets and over small stairs, every way seems to lead to the main sightseeing spot of the city. If you are planning a typical-tourist visit of the Castle, you should set it up at noon. Punctually at 1 pm, the one-hour gun is fired every day except Sundays. This historic time signal as well as the many other building complexes of the castle are absolutely worth the visit. Especially the fantastic view over the city, is worth the climb.
Just in front of the Castle, the famous Royal Mile, Edinburgh’s probably oldest street, begins. On the 1.7km long tourist mile, everything from the checkered skirts, to Scottish whiskey and all other souvenirs you do not need, you will find here.  Worth a visit is the Royal Mile Market. A small market with a nice café in an old church, also on the Royal Mile. Strolling down the street, you will automatically pass many sights, until you reach at the end the Palace of Holyrood House, the official residence of the British Queen in Scotland. Next to it there is the Scottish Parliament, which we inspected for a free, after a little security check at the entrance.

The City Center

In the city center, there is no way past the main shopping road, the Princes Street. Here you can find all known fashion chains as well as Scotland’s oldest department store, Jenners. A short walk through Princes Street Gardens, just below the road, should also be part of every city visit. Pretty landscaped gardens just below the Castle invite you to take a break, especially in fine weather. Directly adjacent to the gardens you will find the Scottish National Gallery. Lovers of the Old Masters will get their money’s worth. The collection is very impressive. But also for non-art lovers, I recommend the visit! The entrance is free and the building itself is worth the tour because of its architecture.
From here you can climb over the hill on which the Castle is situated, to the well-known Grassmarket, with its pretty colorful facades of houses. The small individual stores there, I particularly liked. Here you will definitely find pretty and original souvenirs, away from the classic tourist traps.
Continue to Edinburgh University. I was impressed with the pictures on my preliminary research and so we visited the impressive campus. Here again the purest Harry Potter feeling!
Very old and interesting is also the old valley district „Dean Village“. An enchanted romantic place, which can also be reached from the city center by foot. It is best to choose the path along the small river. Once more, you can feel the past centuries and enjoy a small oasis of peace in the middle of the city.

Coffee & breakfast lover – watch out!

I was very also impressed by Edinburgh´s good coffee and breakfast spots! Almost too many good options to try them all on one short trip! The following cafes I do not list simply because we were there. Indeed they were all great !!
The Urban Angel would be easily overlooked from the outside, but the visit is worth it! Cozy location with great breakfast. Only a few meters further on, you can get a perfect Barista Coffee To Go at the Wellington Coffee. The best brownie of my (previous) life I actually found in Edinburgh: In the Cairngorm Coffee. There are 2 of them in the city and both stores are also highly recommended in terms of coffee! Just like the Fortitude, where I finally got my warm yummi scones! On the second day we had breakfast in the beautiful Café Leo`s Beanery. Delicious Porridge and Eggs Benedict let us start the day very satisfied.
For lunch, I recommend The Pantry. A bright stylish cafe with great snacks and nice service. My poached egg with veggies on bread was almost too pretty to eat! 🙂
For a „sweet break“ in the afternoon, you either go to Lovecrumbs (best cake) or Mimi’s Little Bakehouse (for real sweet tooth people).
And for the healthy people among you there is the Hula Juice Bar, right at the Grassmarket. Here you get from fresh juices, smoothies and the classic bowls, everything the healthy heart desires.

Summary

For the fact that I flew with few shows and expectations to Edinburgh, the enthusiasm was then all the greater! Such a pretty city with history, many sights and great cafes! I now definitely want to explore more of Scotland and surely Edinburgh would great to integrat into a round trip through the country!
