Off to Flandern

Total überrascht war ich, auf eine so trendige, junge und sehenswerte Stadt zu treffen, obwohl sie mir zuvor nie ausdrücklich empfohlen wurde! Generell finde ich, dass man Antwerpen viel zu selten auf den Listen der beliebtesten Großstädte Europas findet – völlig zu Unrecht!

Dies muss geändert werden und daher möchte ich Euch heute einen Trip in diese tolle Shopping-, Mode- und Lifestyle-Metropole schmackhaft machen! Was mich dort besonders beeindruckt hat, verrate ich Euch in diesem Beitrag…

Hello Belgium, new friend

Die Entdeckung Antwerpens, als eine meiner neuen Lieblingsstädte, eröffnet mir ganz neue Möglichkeiten. Quasi gleich um die Ecke, traf ich dort auf alles, was ich mir persönlich bei einer Stadt wünsche! Unmengen an coolen Food-Konzepten, gemütliche „Mädchen-Cafés“, Vintage-Shopping, originelle Boutiquen, wie auch viel Kultur und ein schönes Stadtbild. Eine im Vergleich zu anderen Großstädten entspannte Stadt, in welcher auf überschaubarer Fläche unheimlich viel passiert. Nicht umsonst kannte ich die Stadt vom Hören hauptsächlich aus meinen Zeiten aus der Modebranche. Antwerpen gilt hier als eine wichtige Inspirationsquelle in Sachen Fashion und Trends.

Arrival and Stay

Es muss gar nicht immer der aufwendige und teure Trip mit dem Flieger sein! London, Paris, Rom.. alles wunderschön! Aber ein aufregendes Wochenende mit den Freundinnen oder dem Freund in einer Stadt, in der alle auf ihre Kosten kommen, geht auch einfacher! In nur 2 Stunden haben wir es mit dem Auto von Köln nach Antwerpen geschafft! Solltet Ihr Eure Anreise mit der Bahn planen, werdet Ihr Euer erstes Highlight noch gleich bei der Ankunft am Hauptbahnhof erleben. Die Haupthalle gleicht eher einer prachtvollen Kathedrale und nicht umsonst wurde der Bahnhof bereits als der 4. schönste der Welt ausgezeichnet.

Zum Übernachten hatte ich ein gemütliches Dachgeschoss-Airbnb gebucht. Dieses hätte logistisch nicht besser liegen können! Mitten auf einer beliebten Restaurant-Straße (man hörte oben nichts), nur ein paar Meter entfernt vom schönen Grote Markt, ist der Blick über die historischen Dächer der Stadt und auf die Liebfrauenkirche einmalig. Mit der Erkundung der Stadt konnten wir somit fußläufig gleich vor der Haustür starten.

Das Herz der Stadt ist der Grote Markt mit den prunkvollen Zunfthäusern rundherum. Das ganze hat einen märchenhaften Charme. Hier finden sich auch viele nette (touristische) Restaurants und wir starten den Tag im Vascobelo V-Bar Café, mit Blick auf das beeindruckende Rathaus. Die Location ist puristisch-cool eingerichtet und wir bekommen ein super Frühstück, mit noch besserem Kaffee. Das können sie in Antwerpen! 🙂

Antiques & Fashion Shopping Paradise

Da wir an einem Sonntag starten, können wir nun gestärkt über den Sonntags-Flohmarkt direkt am Eingang des Sint-Annatunnel schlendern. Gleich im Anschluss biegen wir von dort aus auf die Kloosterstraat ein. Hier finden wir das reinste Antiquitäten-Paradies vor und die meisten Läden haben sonntags geöffnet. Wunderschön arrangierte Stöber-Läden – der Himmel für alle Liebhaber origineller und geschichtsträchtiger Möbel und Einrichtungsstücke. Ich bin beeindruckt und plane später einmal hier für mein eigenes Landhaus auf Schatzsuche zu gehen. 😉

Auch Fashionistas werden in den Boutiquen und Konzept-Stores auf der Kloosterstraat fündig werden. Augen auf, denn viele Läden entdeckt man erst auf den zweiten Blick, zurückliegend in den Hinterhöfen. Cool fand ich z.B. YOUR oder den SCOOP Store.

Wenn Ihr sowieso zum Shoppen gekommen seid, findet Ihr alle bekannten Brands auf der Haupteinkaufsstraße, der Meir. Meine Lieblingsbummel-Straße war jedoch die Kammenstraat. Hier findet Ihr neben trendy Boutiquen auch alle „coolen“ Brands wie All Saints, Diesel, Noe etc. Bei „Ringz and Thingz“ schlage ich beim Modeschmuck zu.

Das Modemuseum hatte leider bei unserem Besuch geschlossen, aber vielleicht habt Ihr Zeit, ihm einen Besuch abzustatten?

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend

Bekanntermaßen ist Antwerpen DIE Welthauptstadt für Diamantenhandel. Das jüdische Diamantenviertel selbst hatte ich mir definitiv glamouröser vorgestellt. Beeindruckend finde ich die vielen Rabbis und die Geschäfte, in welchen alles für den Diamanten-Profi erhältlich ist. Lupen, Waagen und Messgeräte sind in den Auslagen zu sehen. Dann geht es auf die wohl funkelnste Straße der Welt, die Vestingstraat. Ein Schaufenster nach dem nächsten voll mit Diamant-Schmuck, wohin das Auge blickt. Auch wenn ich persönlich nicht auf Glitzer stehe, würde ich hier wohl doch fündig werden… 😉

Need a Break(fast)?

Ihr habt Lust auf was Süßes? Dann müsst Ihr die weltbesten Cupcakes bei Momade oder eine der köstlichen belgischen Waffeln bei Creme de la Creme probieren. Beide Cafés haben eine Wahnsinns-Auswahl und wir konnten uns kaum entscheiden! Und Waffeln dürfen bei einem Besuch in Belgien schließlich nicht fehlen!

Kurze Stops legten wir außerdem in dem französischen Le Pain Quotidien und im Caffenation (super Kaffee) ein.

Unbedingt muss ich Euch von einem meiner Gastro-Highlights in Antwerpen berichten: Plein Publiek. Soo cool! Das ursprüngliche Gewächshaus, welches jetzt eine Bar/Restaurant/Event-Location ist, steht versteckt in einem Innenhof eines heruntergekommenen Wohnblocks. Nichts was man im Vorbeigehen entdeckt. Wir waren nachmittags dort, wobei ich vermute, dass die Location abends noch beeindruckender ist.

Bitte testet für mich das Barchel und Tinsel, diese Cafés hatten leider geschlossen 🙁

Dinnerplans

Für eine wirklich leckere Pizza empfehle ich Euch das Otomat, für Burgerfans gleich um die Ecke Ellis Gourmet Burger. Super fand ich das Konzept von Balls & Glory. In dem fancy Laden dreht sich tatsächlich alles um Fleischbällchen! Ja wirklich! 🙂

Insider Tip

Für einen Perspektivenwechsel bzw. einen einmaligen Blick über die Dächer von Antwerpen, empfehle ich das MAS Museum. Das Museum liegt mitten in einem kleinen Yachthafen im Norden der Stadt und die große Dachterrasse ist täglich und kostenfrei zugänglich. Die vielen Rolltreppen nach oben lohnen sich! Auch architektonisch ist das Gebäude den Besuch wert.

Off to Flandern

I was totally surprised to find such a trendy, young and beautiful city, although it was never really recommended to me before! In general, Antwerp is very rare among the lists of the most popular  cities of Europe – why?
In my opinion this must be changed and today I would like to recommend you a trip to this great shopping, fashion and lifestyle metropolis! What I was mainly impressed about and what I liked most, I will tell you in the following post…

Arrival & Stay

It does not always have to be the expensive trip by plane! London, Paris, Rome… all wonderful! But an exciting weekend with friends or boyfriend in a city, where everyone gets their money is also easier! In only 2.5 hours we took the car from Cologne to Antwerp! If you plan to arrive by train, you will experience your first highlight at the main station. The hall is like a magnificent cathedral and not for nothing was the station already as the 4th most beautiful in the world.
Even the cozy attic airbnb could not have been logistically better! In the middle of a popular restaurant-street, just a few meters away from the beautiful Grote Markt, the view over the historical roofs of the city from here is unique. With the exploration of the city we could start just in front of the house.

Antiques & Fashion Shopping Paradise

The heart of the city is the Grote Markt with the magnificent guild houses around. The whole has an almost fairy charm. There are also many nice (touristy) restaurants and we start the day at the Vascobelo V-Bar Café, overlooking the impressive town hall. The location is purist and cool and we get a great breakfast, with even better coffee. Concerning coffee they know what they are doing in Antwerp! 🙂
Since we start our trip on a Sunday, we can now stroll over the Sunday flea market, which is located at the entrance of the Sint Annatunnel. Right after that we follow the Kloosterstraat from there. Here we find the purest antiques paradise and most shops are open on Sundays. Beautifully arranged stores – heaven for all lovers of original and historical furniture and decoration. I am impressed and plan to come back here, for treasure hunting for my own future country house. 😉
Fashionistas will also find their way into the boutiques and concept stores on the Kloosterstraat. Eyes open: many stores you discover only at second glance, back in the backyards. I really liked e.g. YOUR or the SCOOP Store.
If you came to Antwerp to shop anyways, you will find all well known brands on the main shopping street, the Meir. But my favorite stroll was however on the Kammenstraat. Here you will find not only trendy boutiques but also all „cool“ brands such as All Saints, Diesel, Noe etc. At „Ringz and Thingz“ I found some nice fashion jewelry.
The Fashion Museum was unfortunately closed during our visit, but maybe you have the chance to visit it?

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend

Antwerp is well known as the world capital of diamonds. The Jewish diamond quarter itself, I had definitely imagined being more glamorously. Impressive were the many rabbis and the shops, in which you find everything for becoming a professional diamond trader. Loupes, trolleys and measuring instruments can be seen in the displays. Then you’ll reach Vestingstraat, probably the most sparkling street in the world. One window after the other full of diamonds and diamond jewelry, wherever you look. Even if I’m not into glitter at all, I would probably something here nevertheless … 😉

Need a break (fast)?

You are looking for something sweet? You must try the worlds best cupcakes at Momade or one of the delicious Belgian waffles at Creme de la Creme. Both cafes have an amazing selection and we could hardly decide! And waffles must not be missed during a visit to Belgium anyways!
We also had short breaks at Le Pain Quotidien and Caffenation.
Another of my Antwerp highlights: Plein Publiek. Soo cool! The original greenhouse, which is now a bar/restaurant/event location, is hidden in a courtyard of a down-turned block of flats. Nothing you discover just by passing by. We were there in the afternoon, but I guess the location is even more impressive in the evening.

Please test for me the Barchels and Tinsel, these cafes were on my list, but unfortunately closed

Dinner plans

For a really tasty pizza I recommend the Otomat, for Burger fans just around the corner Ellis Gourmet Burger. I also really liked the concept of Balls & Glory. In this fancy restaurant everything is about meatballs! Really!

Insider tipp

For a change of perspective or a unique view over the roofs of the city, I recommend the MAS Museum. The museum is located in the middle of a small marina in the north of the city and the large roof terrace is accessible daily and free of charge. The many escalators to the top are worth it! Also architecturally the building is worth visiting.
