Mallorca – The Germans favorite island

Turning happy 30 – on the island

Beaches at Mallorca – crystalclear water and powder sand

Where to eat at Mallorca

The Germans favorite island

Actually you should do it at least once a year: travel to Mallorca! The Balearic Island is the favorite one for Germans for many reasons. White beaches, hidden bays, crystal clear water, beautiful villages, amazing landscapes and delish tapas! Why Mallorca is the place to be for me, I will tell you today…

Turning happy 30 – on the island

In 2016 the number of visitors of Mallorca reached record figures and I have to admit, it was a bit of my fault, too. To give the to me a bit frustrating event of turning 30 a little positive flair, I invited my people to join me on sunny Mallorca. I planned a 10-day trip, rent a beautiful Airbnb-finca in the countryside and as a matter of fact 30 of my most beloved friends and family came over to celebrate.

What can I say – it was amazing! Especially for Germans Mallorca is THE travel-destination number 1. Not only because other popular destination turned out to be not safe anymore. The island actually offers more or less anything, a passionate traveler can ask for. Not that I´ve been on the island uncountable times. It was only the 4th time for me. Nevertheless I´m convinced to have some interesting and inspiring tips to pitch the Mallorca for you.

General Info

Mallorca is the biggest island of the spanish balearic group and the only airport at the capital Palma is being reached all year from any German airport. If you´re interested in an authentic impression of the island (and you are!), you cannot avoid to get a rental car. Although there is a good working bus-system on the island, you don’t want to give up your flexibility for that. There is nothing better than cruising spontaneously between the lonely bays, small villages and colorful markets. Just following the sun and good vibes.

Concerning the accommodation I definitely recommend: no hotel! Eg. on Airbnb you find uncountable authentic fincas and especially when you´re a hand full of people, you can find real treasures, as we had one. There is nothing better than living in your own house with a huge garden and private pool and just let yourself go!

Places & Markets

Me myself I love the combination of visiting the markets and beautiful villages, before you head to beach. Almost every city and village on the island is holding a market at least once a week. They transform these sleepy spots into loud and colorful tourist-destinations. You will never be alone! The offer consists of almost everything from fruits and vegetables, local specialties, fabrics, handcraft, jewelry, antiques as well as leather goods or even animals.

Some of my favorite cities are definitely Santanyí (pretty market Wednesdays & Saturdays) and Artà (markets Tuesdays & Saturdays) in the east, Sineu (traditional market Wednesdays) in the center of the island and the beautiful villages Valdemossa and Dejá in the west of Mallorca. I also really like the Friday-market of the not so popular Llucmajor. On Fridays they are also holding a second hand market on which you can find several Spanish treasures from time to time.

Of course Palma itself is a Must, too. The amazing old town is always busy with its breathtaking cathedral, the small places with all these tapas-bars and the ice cream shops all over as well as all the Spanish boutiques and fashion-chains. Here you mostly stroll around, shop and walk along the harbor. This is definitely worth it, before you start to explore the smaller villages around within the next days.

Beaches – crystal clear water and powder sand

Mallorca indeed offers tons of small bays as well as wide beaches, which you can compare with those in the Caribbean without doubt. Only the loneliness you will probably never find on Mallorca.. If you are not a lucky boat owner, who can reach beaches, which are hard to get to by foot, you have to be prepared to share the sand with “several” other tourists.

Here I will give you some information about the beaches I personally like: my favorite beach so far is S`Amarador in the area of Cala Mondragó, close to Santanyí. Framed by rocks and green trees, this beach with its white sand and the crystal clear water is just a dream. No hotels can be spotted and already the way from the parking space is worth to come here (choose way no.3).

Not far away from this beach you will find the small bays Cala Sa Nau, Cala Pi or the famous beach Es Trenc, which many people name as the most beautiful one of the island. In the north, close to Artá you find Cala Torta. This beach is very pretty, too, just the way to get down there is quite of a torture, as it is very bumpy.

The quite narrow but wide beach in the north in the bay of Alcudia I like a lot because of the beautiful scenery, the mountains in the background. Here you find some cool and trendy beach clubs to relax as the Ponderosa Beach, MOAI or Can Gavella (all close to Can Picafort).

Where to eat

PALMA – If you`re eventually interested in travelling from Spain to Italy, when it comes to food, I highly recommed the best pizza in Palma (with goat cheese or truffle) at the a little hidden Il Tano in Santa Catalina and the pistaccio ice cream from the ice cream shop Sa Gelateria Cort in the city center. For a very fresh and healthy start into the day, after too many tapas, you have to visit Ziva To Go. The only Raw Food Café on the island so far, also in Santa Catalina, provides you with smoothies, fresh pressed juices, granola, salads and sandwiches.

For tapas in the evening you can go to Tast Union (book a table) and drinks afterwards at the Abaco Bar. Hidden behind a massive wooden door this bar is offering a unique ambiente, inside and outside. But be aware of the prices: every cocktail costs 16€, but what shall I say.. you only live once!

SANTANYÍ – one of my favorite spots anyways, does this place offer lots of very good food places, too. Breakfast I would recommend at Café Goli, in the pretty patio and dinner I would definitely recommend to have at super romantic and beautiful Es Moli.

ARTÀ – Here you have to visit Café Parisien. French music, yummy snacks and drinks (they even offer Matcha latte) for good prices and the ambience in the pretty and green patio in the back is one place to relax. Perfect for a little break, while visiting the Saturday-market.

DEJÀ – Here the boyfriend decided for the tapas restaurant Xelini and it was the right decision! Sitting outside you don’t have the view down the valley, but nevertheless you can enjoy all the delicious tapas (eg. tuna-potato-salad or goatcheese) under the green pergola.

LLUCMAJOR – If you are here go to Café Colon for breakfast! The choice of fresh and delish sandwiches is huge (eg. the one with omelette) and especially on Fridays you can easily watch the entertaining on goings on the market, before you start your own treasure hunting.

Insider Tip

At Cala Sa Nau you can enjoy a pretty fresh seafood dinner, while putting your feet in the sand. And at weekends the DJ let you celebrate your holidays aside from all the mass tourism at other party locations.
