The sky could be your office!

STEP 1 – Registrierung & Bewerbung anlegen

Was ist Euch (hoffentlich) aufgefallen?

Good Luck !

10 Reasons why Flight Attendant is the better Job

Flight Attendant – A Job for you?

Come Fly with Me!

English

Get your tips for your application

If you have read my previous post „Flight attendant – A job for you?“ from the „My Job“ section and have determined that the job as a flight attendant could be your dream job, today’s post could be very interesting for you, too!

Because as promised, today I would like to give you some information and helpful tips for the application and the application process as flight attendants in general and especially at Lufthansa. What should you look out for, how does the process look like and how can you prepare the best?

The sky could be your office!

At the beginning I should mention that my application process is already 2 years ago and since then there have probably been slight changes. Nevertheless, it is certainly interesting for you to know, how it was back then:

Online application

STEP 1 – Online Registration & Application

The online application is the first step and should be feasible for everyone. For this purpose, you have to submit your own online profile at Lufthansa Applicant Management, under which you can log in at any time and check your status.

Here, you now maintain all your data and the basic requirements such as body size, presence of a passport, etc. Only the required motivation letter requires a little leisure. I paid particular attention to it. I wanted to make it quite clear why I absolutely wanted to change from my „serious office job“ into the „crazy“ job of the flight attendant and that I have considered the decision well. It should not fail about this fact! 🙂

Take a look at some of the aspects that you might consider unimportant. Have you, for example, ever worked as a waiter or in other areas where you had a lot of contact with other people? Then highlight this! Did you go on longer trips or have other foreign stations? Great! Mention it!

All ready? Send!!!

STEP 2 – The Onlinetest

If you have successfully completed the online application and have fullfilled the basic requirements, the onlinestest will follow. I know, „test“ sounds very wild right now and I also went totally crazy about it.
Attention: You have 10 days to process your application including the online test.
The onlinestest consists of a little English inquiry. However, if you have paid a little attention English lessons, this part will not be a problem for you. You only have to select the right terms and find the correct answers via „Drag & Drop“. You can find an exercise version here.
During the test, a countdown runs, which, however, is basically not there to test your stress resistance. He is supposed to make sure that the tests do not have the possibility to google everything again. Because then the tests would be superfluous. 😉

STEP 3 – The telephone interview

The telephone interview is usually step 3 in the application process at Lufthansa, but I was no part of my application process. I guess at the time they needed to speed up the process a bit, because they had a great need for new staff. So unfortunately I can not tell you much about it.

STEP 4 – The selection day

Now you almost made it – you are invited to the last step, the selection day! Well done! Now it is important to do everything right, even in the last and most important step!
The selection day takes place at Frankfurt Airport at the Aviation Center of Lufthansa and you will be provided with free flightticket, so that you get to the selection day easier, even from far away. But these are „only“ so-called stand-by tickets, which means that you can not book a confirmed seat in advance. You will only be taken on the plane when there are available vacancies, which is not always the case, early in the morning on domestic flights. Therefore, I would advise you to plan generously, if you want to use the flight ticket and if necessary, arrive the evening before. Punctuality is very important to flight attendants!
Once you have arrived, you will immediately meet your competitors and the first thing you expect is another English test, PC based. I still remember that we had 30 minutes and to me the test seemed much easier than the English online test. I was already finished after half of the time and then waited outside for the others.
Next, you will be picked up by a member of staff to test your English skills in a short casual small talk. I was asked what my favorite movie was and what it was about. The conversation was nice, but really short and I was immediately told that I had passed this test. Again I went back to the group, which was actually already smaller after the PC test.
The last stage on this day was the one-on-one talk with a psychologist. She asked for my motivation and what I would think, which is particularly important in the job as a flight attendant. Afterwards I had to put myself on board in two critical situations and make suggestions how I would solve them. At that time I found that the lady had an absolute Pokerface and with the best will I could not interpret, if she was satisfied with my answers or not…;)
Overall I was done in only two hours with the selection day and was very happy with the process. Between the single steps, we always had the opportunity to talk to a real flight attendant and ask personal questions.
And obviously not everything I did was wrong, as I got a positive feedback alreay the next day by email! 🙂

New: The flight attendant castings

Meanwhile, there is a new recruitment procedure, which is much faster and more straightforward than the online application: the castings. These take place in different cities of Germany and you just go there without pre-registration. You should only go through the checklist beforehand, if you have the necessary prerequisites and then appear with a valid ID.
The number of participants is limited and it`s first come, first serve! You can find the dates for the castings on the Lufthansa Career Portal here. For this year the dates have all already taken place, but the dates for 2017 will be published there soon!
At these appointments, conversations will be held in German and English and you will be informed immediately afterwards whether Lufthansa will offer you a job or not. As the day of the casting will be most important for you, I’ve put together some personal tips for you.

My personal tips

Preparation

How can you prepare yourself for a personal appointment to make a good impression on the scene? No matter whether it is the selection day or the casting, the impressions on this day counts! Me myself interviewt two flight attendants that I knew and that really helped me. They were able to answer all my questions and I was able to arrive at the appointment in a much more relaxed way than it would otherwise have been the case. Of course, you have the chance to interview me today! 😉
I also remember how I went to the ladies at the check-in, in order to ask them some more questions I had. What would you do if a child on board cannot calm down? How do you deal with a conspicuous passenger? The two were very nice and have actually given me some valuable advice.
What is also helpful, especially for the conversation with the psychologists: try to put you in the position of a flight attendant. What possible problems or challenges could you expect on board and how could you solve them best possible? The more situations you have imagined, the more secure you can go into the conversations!

Behaviour

How can you convince your potential employer to be a potential flight attendant? Imagine you are at the airport and see the crews, which can be observed inbetween their flights. How would the employees of an airline have to be for you, so that you feel well cared for? Correct: Friendly and self-confident! 🙂 An upright gait, open look in the eyes of the opposite and very important: a hearty smile. Be always nice, also to your competitors. Here you can prove your team spirit for the first time and this is enormously important on board!

Outfit & Appearance

Besides the behaviour, your personal appearance is no less important! If you’ve already flown (I’m sure), you already had the opportunity to watch flight attendants in action. What did you notice (hopefully)? The crew always looks smart, neat and tidy. People who you would trust. Although you will get the complete uniform from Lufthansa, everything around it also has to be on point. For this, Lufthansa even offers a whole seminar as part of the education, called „Style & Smile“. 🙂 Here you will learn how to dress up, which makeup is appropriate and underlines your type, which hairstyles are suitable and what possibilities are there to wear the scarf. But why not already leave a positive impression on the application date with a perfect appearance?
For me this includes defintely a well-groomed feminine look for the girls. Ironed blouse, blazer, matching fabric pants or skirt with tights and in any case classic chic pumps. The make up should be discreet, mayba a nice lipstick? Nails neutral painted and why not attract positiv attention already with a typical fligth attendant-hairstyle? A proper knot, we can all do that, right? 😉
For the gentlemen it should be a well-fitting suit without a tie or at least a shirt, a blazer and a very well-groomed jeans with leather shoes.
You should always take out piercings before, even in the ears if they are not the classical ear holes. These are just as forbidden at work on board as visible tattoos! A tattoo e.g. on the hand or on the neck are No Gos and can cause you to be sent home right away.

Good luck !

So, you future flight attendants, I wish you good luck and would appreciate your shared experiences and reports! 🙂

Hi Katrin, thanks so much for your deteiled information. I’m a Chinese, now living in Frankfurt. I had 6 years flight experience in Chinese Airline, I really want to go back to „Sky Office“, but my problem is that I could not speak very good German. (Mein Deutsch ist im moment nur A2) Based on this condition, don’t you think I still get a chance to realise my dream in Lufthansa? Looking forward to your reply and best regards.
